Experiment: PoC for 360 interactive about Oval Office redecoration.
Objective:
Kristi Walker and I wanted to investigate the feasibility of creating a 360° interactive that would allow users to decorate the Oval in advance of the inauguration.
A-Frame.io makes it darn simple to create a 360 interactive. See the I-Frame below created in 18 lines. Source here.
The challenge, however, is getting source material. For the demo below, we looked at 3D models of the Oval available at 3D Warehouse. User Adrien23 has created a nice series of historic models. We had issues with accuracy and licensing, but even more problematic there was no simple way to create equirectangular images from the 3D models. Eventually, we used screenshots and Kolor AGP to stitch together an equirectangular projection, but it was not an efficient workflow.
This project was scrapped for time.
Next Steps
Find another excuse to do a 360° interactive
Determine a workflow for easily creating an equirectangular projection from common 3D formats. (perhaps through mettle skybox)
Feedback
Ben: 360 interactivity is easily achievable with A-Frame.io but creating 360 assets still remains a great deal of work.
