Objective:  For place-based stories it would be useful to offer a 3D overview of a region.

Work:

After poking around with a few other options I discovered http://jthatch.com/Terrain2STL/ which makes it VERY easy to download 3D terrain.

I need to investigate downloading full color sat images: http://gisgeography.com/free-satellite-imagery-data-list/

Next Steps

  • Color the terrain using Sattelite imagery
  • Trying inserting it into aframe.io and making it interactive
